Salut a tous,

I have read many posts on this subject and I have a theory that I haven't seen yet. This may sound to simple, but sometimes it's the simple things we overlook. I believe the interference fit between the graphics card and the AGP slot is not sufficient enough to make proper contact when the machine is cold. The cold temperature, even though it may be room temperature, has the materials of both parts contracted enough that sufficient contact between the graphics card and the AGP slot is not being achieved. There are a few things that lead me to come to this conclusion. 1. It always happens after extended periods of sleep or complete power off. In power off the machine is going to assume room temperature after a few hours. The same will happen when the machine is sleeping, even though there may be a trickle of power going through the machine it is not going to be enough to keep the temperature elevated. Put the machine to sleep overnight and feel the case in the morning, it will be cool. Also, my G5 didn't start this until the room it is in got down to about 62 deg F. This could be a coincidence but it does support my theory. I was able to get video after reseatting the graphics card. Maybe this moved the card just enough to make proper contact. I worry that reseatting the card to many times may make the situation worse by further loosening the contact between the card and the slot. This may explain why some people have the problem get worse overtime, to many graphics card reseats. 2. It appears to be happening with the nVidia cards as well as the ATI cards, though there does seem to be allot more ATI complaints than nVidia. I don't how many of each card are out there so it's hard to give a percentage to the amount of complaints for each card. 3. Level of OS X doesn't appear to matter, it seems just about all of them have had the problem at some point or another in these discussions. 4. It appears that a few posts say start the G5, let it run for 15 or 20 minutes, and then come back and reboot it. After reboot no more black screen. I believe the components expanded enough from the internal heat to make sufficient contact. Since I got my display back after the problem I have not shut off the machine or put it to sleep. I have the energy saver set to sleep the monitor after 30 minutes of inactivity and sleep the hard drive when possible. When I got up this morning the monitor came right out of sleep. Same thing when I got home from work tonight. I moved the mouse and the monitor wakes right up. I don't know if this is the answer, but it certainly is possible. I know this isn't a solution but until I hear that Apple is going to do something to help us all out I am going to leave the energy saver settings as I have them and leave the machine running. If there are any materials experts out there please let me know if I am off base. |
