Upgrade SSD pciexpress MacBook air et pro, mettre un ssd M.2 NVMe dans un MacBook Air ou Pro

Bonjour,

Je cherchais à upgrader un macbook air toujours plein par un disque SSD.
Depuis fin 2012 les macbooks ont un connecteur pciexpress x4 propriétaire supportant la norme NVMe (plus rapide que le SATA)

Donc je suis parti à la recherche soit d'un adaptateur pour un SSD M.2 Key M (pciexpress x4) ou un SSD à cette norme chez une marque de type Transcend.

J'ai donc trouvé un chinois sur eBay qui vend l'adaptateur et le disque (oui c'est plus de marge pour lui pour nous ça revient au même)

En fait quand on lit le vendeur sur sintech.cn (taïwanais), il ne faut pas que les ssd soit à la norme NVMe mais AHCI.

j'ai reçu la carte 360 euro (300 HT) les 512 Go en samsung OEM Lenovo XP941.

Installation facile, il faut juste les bons tournevis, merci MacWay d'avoir ouvert des magasins un peu partout dans les grandes villes ;-)

Installation à partir un disque USB pour formater la M.2 et réinstaller le système.
Restauration de la sauvegarde timemachine
Puis un petit sudo forcetrim enable
Et tout fonctionne parfaitement

c'est au même prix voir plus cher car les frais port son bas avec la chine (livraison 15 jours)

sur le ssd que je viens d'intégrer, le trim marche avec l'option "sudo forcetrim enable"
les performances sont supérieures et la reserve est moins grande donc 512go au lieu de 480go.

900 Mo/s en écriture par rapport à 450Mo/s (600M/s le ssd d'origine)
1050 Mo/s en lecture par rapport à 750Mo/s (750 aussi sur celui d'origine)

en plus avec l'adaptateur demain je pourrai mettre un disque M.2 de plus grosse capacité et de meilleur performance:

Sur le papier je suis d'accord, par contre avec les sites chinois on a parfois de mauvaises surprises: commande qui n'arrive pas ou ne correspond pas, matériel non compatible... Donc macsale reste plus fiable de ce côté. Après, si tu n'as pas eu de soucis et que tout te ravie je ne conteste pas.

Et comme je le disais dans le premier post il faut tester les SSD NVMe avec l'adaptateur M.2 pour MacBook (Air et Pro) 2013 et plus, car il existe un pilote pour mettre dans le dossier driver de la partition EFI:

I tried with 2 different SSDs, one was SM951 AHCI MZHPV512HDGL and the other one which i still have at home is MZHPU256HCGL-0004.

I swap two adapters, i had no luck.

The SSD gets power, i can feel it very warm.

I tried booting from USB stick with OS Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan.

I just can not see the SSD drive in Disk Utility.

I tried booting from external HDD/SSD and I still could not see the SSD in Disk Utility.

Maybe the chinese guy which sales adaptors+ SSD is right, he said something about a firmware update for the SSD before the first use. http://www.ebay.com/itm/128GB-SSD-for-2014...;_qi=RTM2247628

Maybe i am missing something.

I used adapters for MacBook Air 2011 and 2012 before and I had np problem.

I suspect power needed by the SSD. can you give us the rated DC in Voltage and Amperage.
firth model need just 1.9 A and the new need 2.7A

Can you try with Unbuntu distribution to see the M.2 SSD?

Ubuntu does not recognize the Ssd.
I tried adaptor+m2 Ssd on macbook air 2013, 2014 and 2015 and on macbook retina 2013.
The rating Power should not matter since you manage to do it on a macbook air.
Don't you have any problem with it?
The chinese seller from eBay said something about sleep mode.
I think he used the same adaptor.
The Ssd was checked on a desktop and is working fine.
Of course, i Could not verify The adaptors, But i unsealed 2 out of 4 and i think that they must be good.

I have similar issue to rino. I put a MZHPV512HDGL (SM951 AHCI) together with the sintech adapter in a 2014 Macbook air. I have mixed results from this upgrade. 80% of the time, the ssd is not detected by the Mac. I do sometimes successful see them in the Mac boot menu and Ubuntu Live boot system. The trick I find is that if your ssd is not seen by the Mac, put back the original apple ssd, perform a successful boot into OSX. Shut it down, open the back, UNPLUG THE BATTERY, put on the new sintetch/ssd, PLUG the BATTERY back, close the back. Now if you power up and hold the option button, you can see the ssd. Using a Ubuntu live usb boot, I can boot into the live Ubuntu desktop, the ssd can be seen both by GParted and Fdisk. Running HDparam can see the information of the ssd and test the speed.

However, the ssd is very unstable even if it is detected. When I tried to install Ubuntu on it, it will fail in about 2 mins and disappears again. I contacted the sintech support, they also think it is because of not enough power supply. Which I don't agree since Mac should have standard power supply on their mother boards. I am more leaning towards the issue is from the firmware, my SM951 have the BXW2500Q controller FW. At first I thought the adapter might only support the XP941 models. but then I see rino also has problem with his MZHPU256HCGL-0004. So I am not sure what exactly is wrong here. Maybe even for XP941, the FW has to be particular version as well. Can rino and bruno post your FW version for your ssd?

Hi Bruno,

I just bought another SM 951 drive that is rated at 1.9A. This time I had less trouble getting the drive recognized by the Mac and successfully installed El Capitan after a few attempts. I was also able to install Windows 10 through boot camp. The only problem I have now is similar to the warning message seen on Ebay that combines the samsung driver and the adapter. When running OSX, the ssd will fail if it goes to sleep, it won't wake up from dormant. I can prevent SSD sleep through settings in Energy Saver, but there is no work around when the laptop lid is closed. OSX will put the entire laptop into sleep when lid is closed, including the SSD. I wounder if you have the same issue with your SSD and did you find a work around for this problem?

Ca motive pour acheter un MBPr 2015 d'occase en 128Go et changer de SSD pour moins de 200 euros ( l'Intel 600p 512Go est à 155euros sur certaines promo).

There are a few NVMe PCIe drives that have been released recently:Intel 600p to name one.
It's definitely cheap to buy a second-hand MBPr 2015 ith 128Gb SSD and change it for less than 200 euros.

And did you try to install an alternative EFI on the Mac?
Could the EFI run the SSD better than Apple's standard EFI?

I used http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/ a few years ago to have windows double-boot easily.

for a mid 2013 Macbook Air model A1466
The Samsung SSD is supposed to replace the original Sandisk SD6PQ4M-256G
So according to the specs on the adapter this combination should work.
But no matter what I tried, the Macbook disk utility does not see the Samsung SSD.
I tried to reset the SMC. I also formatted it to HFS+ in Linux, so I know the SSD is fine. I also created a bootable USB drive with MacOS Sierra, booted with it, and still it will not recognize the Samsung SSD. So either I got a bad adapter, or it is a compatibility issue and not all SSDs work on these Macs. If anyone has any ideas, I will be glad to hear them.

The adapter vendor says that the only way is to format the SSD externally via USB. So once I get my hands on a USB to PCIe adapter that will be the next attempt.

I don't have the same material and issue, but I'm definitely interested in knowing if you find any solution.

I suggested trying to use a different EFI than Apple's. As rEFInd. I don't know if the SSD recognition process takes place before EFI is loaded (EFI is supposed to be loaded from the a hard drive... So I'm a bit confused...).

Other than that, there is NVRAM and SMC reinit, as stated by other (more) specialists here.

I installed a Kingston KC1000 480G on my MacBook Pro 15 Retina (Late 2013).
The disk is visible and usable on OSX High Sierra (installed on an external drive), or even on Ubuntu live USB. It works great and very fast.
But the Bootrom does not see the disk during boot. I tried going into recovery mode to disable SIP, but I end up into the external drive Recovery. Disabling SIP from there doesn't change a thing.
Than I tried to disable SIP from Net Recovery, which has Mavericks version and... the 'csrutil' tool is not present there

In your opinion how do I do? I think it's really a SIP problem?
Or do you suggest other ways to make this disk visible / allowed during boot? (holding ALT key during boot).
